The Most Distant Cosmic Explosion Ever!
by Michael G. Mickey
(9-13-05)
Luke 21:25: And there shall be signs in the sun, and
in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations,
with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Signs in the stars? Oh yes! We have those --- and BIG ones apparently!
Voice
of America is currently reporting astronomers have detected the most
distant explosion ever witnessed in the heavens - a flash so powerful that
they could observe the faint light as it came in from almost the edge of
the known universe. According to the article, the observance of this cosmic
explosion sets a new record for both the distance and age of an observed
star explosion!
While the magnitude of the cosmic explosion itself is astounding
enough to stand on its own merits as a significant indicator that the return
of Jesus Christ may well be right around the prophetic corner, there's more
to consider. Think of the amazing technologies that were utilized by mankind
to record this dramatic event, as detailed in the article.
On September 4th, NASA's Swift satellite was searching the
heavens for exploding stars when it spotted the explosion. Then, according
to the article:
As soon as Swift detected the explosion, ground telescopes
worldwide were trained on the x-ray and visible light afterglow and confirmed
the event.
University of North Carolina astronomer Daniel Reichart measured the
non-visible, infrared wavelengths of light from the dying star. His calculations
show that the explosion occurred almost 13 billion years ago, close to
the time of the cataclysmic explosion believed to have created the universe,
the Big Bang.
The prophet Daniel was told, as recorded in Daniel 12:4 (emphasis
added mine): But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book,
even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge
shall be increased.
To say mankind's knowledge has been increased dramatically
in my lifetime is an injustice to the wondrous strides that have been made.
That a cosmic event like this can, in a coordinated fashion, be observed
by telescopes all over the world at a moment's notice is simply incredible,
is it not?
Many are running to and fro about the earth at a time when
many scientists are watching the heavenlies by way of incredible advancements
in technology like NASA's Swift satellite. As incredibly swift as the Swift
satellite is in coordinating many telescopes on the ground to record cosmic
events of incredible magnitude, I'd be lying if I said I didn't think those
of us trusting in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior will soon zip past
the Swift satellite on our way to the third heaven before a single telescope
on the ground can spin to get a glimpse of us waving goodbye to a world
that has forgotten its God!
1st Corinthians 15:51-52: Behold, I shew you a mystery; We
shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound,
and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
We shall be changed and we shall be GONE! Caught up
to be with the Lord!
