Astronauts fear the sky is going to fall?

by Michael G. Mickey

(11-9-05)

A Fox News story opens as follows:

Imagine last year's tsunami, last month's earthquake in Pakistan, and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma all rolled into one — and then some. If nations can't handle those calamities, what's going to happen when an asteroid collides with Earth?

The answer to Fox's frightening question, quite possibly, lies in Bible prophecy.

In the seven-year Tribulation Period to come, there are two events described, at least one of which, if not both, seem demonstrative of how such an event may play out in the prophetic future.

Revelation 8:8-9: And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

Whatever the "great mountain burning with fire" is descriptive of, the impact of it being cast into the sea is going to wipe out a third of all sea life and shipping. And then there's the coming of the star called by its very name - Wormwood!

Revelation 8:10-11: "And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter."

In back-to-back judgments, both of which will take place in the first 3 1/2 years of the Tribulation Period, we see events similar in description to bodies from space striking the planet!

Building on what we read in Revelation 8:8-9, Revelation 8:10-11 indicates the arrival of Wormwood is going to cause more devastation to occur! Not only will a third of the sea become blood, a third of all sea life die, and a third of all shipping be destroyed, Wormwood, following on the heels of the great mountain burning with fire being cast into the sea, is going to leave a third of the earth's fresh water undrinkable and deadly poisonous in the wake of its impact. Talk about a nightmare scenario - or two as is the case!

Back to the Fox News story.

According to the story, many former astronauts, one of whom is Apollo 9's Rusty Schweickart, believe we need to begin preparing to confront the threat posed by space objects which may someday impact the earth.

Schweickart is quoted in the story as saying, "There are always natural disasters and it always seems as though the preparation is somewhat less than adequate. But we have had a series of quite substantial ones here in the last year."

Indeed, the world has had some quite substantial disasters in the last year. Sadly, the immediate future will bring nothing better. Of that we can be sure as we are presently witnessing the birth pains of the Tribulation Period to come as prophesied!

As surely as you are reading this website today, with all due respect to America's astronaut heroes, no amount of spending or preparation is going to prevent Revelation 8:8-11 from taking place! The events have been prophesied and, although mankind has come to realize the threat posed by events like those described in prophecy, they will come to pass during the Tribulation Period!

Much like the fictional character 'Chicken Little' believes the sky is going to fall, America's astronauts are afraid the sky (or something from it) is going to fall on an unprepared world with horrific consequences. While I concur with their assessment of the dangers posed by these objects zooming through space, I thoroughly understand and accept that the only thing I can do to protect myself, assuming the events described in Revelation 8:8-11 are scheduled to take place within my lifetime according to God's prophetic calendar and will, is to not be here when they get here!

As I state here regularly and emphatically, the return of Jesus Christ for His Church is going to come at an hour no one can predict, as seen in Matthew 24:42. When He does, only those who have come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are going to be spared the suffering of the Tribulation Period that will follow - the time when those who have worried that the sky may someday fall, figuratively speaking, will see their worst fears become reality.

Luke 21:25-26: And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Whenever I write a commentary like this, I can't help but reflect on how thankful I am to know I have a Savior capable of keeping me from witnessing such calamity! If you don't have one, namely Jesus Christ and Him alone, my recommendation is you get one by repenting of your sins and accepting Him as your Lord and Savior as soon as possible, preferably as soon as you finish reading this commentary! Tomorrow may be too late!
