| Mother Jesus, Sister Satan

I'm sure everyone who reads this will be able to recall a time or two when they had a verbal blunder, a slip of the tongue if you will, but there are some things I think it's near impossible to make a mistake on, if you're well-grounded in the truth at least.
As my site's readers know, the Episcopal Church has gone through a great deal of turmoil and internal strife in recent years, making, as a whole, some very poor decisions. A few of those decisions, such as making an openly gay man a Bishop and overwhelmingly refusing to to even consider a resolution affirming Jesus Christ as the "only name by which any person may be saved", have made a mockery of the Word of God as I've documented on the site in the past.
Recently, the Episcopal Church chose Katharine Jefferts Schori, a bishop from Nevada, to be the head of the U.S. Episcopal Church, making her the first female to hold the position of Primate in the worldwide Anglican Communion. It didn't take long under Schori's leadership for us to see why the Episcopal Church has gotten in the mess it's in and why the future doesn't look much better.
In a homily Schori presented on June 21, 2006, the closing date of the Episcopal Church's General Convention that saw her elevated to the prestigious position she now holds, she stated the following, in part:
That bloody cross brings new life into this world. Colossians calls Jesus the firstborn of all creation, the firstborn from the dead. That sweaty, bloody, tear-stained labor of the cross bears new life. Our mother Jesus gives birth to a new creation -- and you and I are His children. If we're going to keep on growing into Christ-images for the world around us, we're going to have to give up fear.
Mother Jesus? MOTHER Jesus???? I've heard of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, but I have never, ever heard the Lord Jesus referred to as "Mother Jesus." That's probably because He didn't come into the world as a little girl but a boy. Jesus was - and is - God's only begotten Son. That's pretty gender-specific from my perspective. Therefore, I think it's safe to say we shouldn't be referring to Jesus Christ as our mother in any sense.
A Freudian slip, in the American Heritage® Dictionary, is defined as: A verbal mistake that is thought to reveal an unconscious belief, thought, or emotion. What I believe we see in Katharine Jefferts Schori's homily is just that - a Freudian slip. Like many in the Episcopal Church, I believe Schori has an underlying agenda - one that seeks to twist and bend the Word of God wherever it needs to go to fit into a politically correct, gender neutral world wherein God is to each individual person whomever they want Him to be, whatever gender they want Him to be, and His teachings a reflection of whatever each individual person wants them to imply.
While some may say I'm being a bit judgmental concerning Schori's homily, I'm okay with that. Why? Because, as I indicated at the outset, there are some things I think it's near impossible to make a mistake on, if you're well-grounded in the truth at least. Take, for example, the following:
Beware Christians for Sister Satan, our adversary, as a white kitten, is meandering about in a little pink dress with yellow ribbons in her hair, seeking whom she may tidily eat.
Question: As you read the preceding paragraph were you able to view Satan as feminine, even with a pink dress and yellow ribbons mentioned? Maybe briefly, but only in a comical sense. Satan, after all, is no kitten. He's a roaring and dangerous lion to be avoided and we know it! In a similar sense, Jesus is a king, not a queen!
Whenever one wonders why the Episcopal Church is in such a mess, look no further than its leadership; the leadership it has chosen. |
