When Will The Lovebirds Stop Singing?

by Michael G. Mickey

For a long time I've been commentating on the future of Turkey's EU accession attempts, both recently and in the somewhat distant past. What have I been predicting, based on the prophetic Word of God? That these two lovebirds, Turkey and the European Union, may neither nest nor sing together for any extended period of time. Why? Because Bible prophecy tells us of a future invasion attempt that will take place against the nation of Israel in the last days. We commonly refer to this event as the Gog-Magog invasion or attack. It is described in Ezekiel 38 & 39 and will see the following nations gather and descend on Israel "as a cloud to cover the land" (Ezekiel 38:16):

  • Gog - Most agree this is a reference to Russia.
  • Meshech - Most associate this with modern day Turkey, ancient Anatolia, but some say it refers to the Moscow area.
  • Tubal - Most associate this with modern day Turkey, ancient Anatolia.
  • Persia - modern Iran
  • Ethiopia
  • Libya
  • Gomer - eastern Europe or Turkey
  • Togarmah - southeastern Europe or Turkey

As we look at those the Word of God tells us will participate in the Gog-Magog attack, one thing becomes abundantly clear and it's this: Turkey's future doesn't seem indicative of it being aligned with the West which the European Union is part of. Rather, the Bible sees Turkey aligned with those who utterly despise the West in the prophetic future. Thus, my long-held suspicions that the EU and Turkey's love for one another will amount to nothing. In other words, the beautiful songs of love these two once sang will come to an end. Guess what? It is coming around - and potentially very quickly!

The EU Observer is reporting that "EU foreign ministers have given a downbeat assessment on the chances of keeping Turkey's accession talks on track, with the Finnish EU presidency openly doubting its chances of reaching a deal on Cyprus and with Austria."

Finnish foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja is quoted in the article as stating, "We have more than three weeks to find a solution acceptable to everyone. I cannot guarantee any success in this. It is also quite possible that we do not reach an agreement within this time."

How is Turkey responding to the EU's assessment of its future EU accession? According to an EUBusiness.com article, Turkey is saying it "will not bow to European 'blackmail' on Cyprus."

Turkey's Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul, is quoted in the article as saying, "Neither Turkey nor the Turkish Cypriots have bowed to blackmail in the past and will not bow to it in the future either." In other words, Turkey will make no concessions to accommodate the EU's wishes.

When will these troubled lovebirds stop singing? Perhaps, it will be soon. If not, assuming that my belief that biblical scholars have correctly identified Turkey as a participant is accurate, it will be later! How can I say that? Because biblical scholars, although they do not agree perfectly on which nations are represented in the future Gog-Magog attack, there is almost unanimous agreement among them that Turkey will be allied with the invading forces and directly involved in the fighting.

The days ahead, where this developing issue of prophetic interest is concerned, are going to prove most interesting! Within the next three weeks, there's no telling what is going to happen on this front so stay tuned, prophecy watchers!
