Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

But his wife [Lot's wife] looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:

And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

We have all heard the story of how God judged Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone out of heaven for their sinfulness and rebellion against Him but could there be archaeological evidence - a historical record of great detail no less - that tells us God's judgment came in the form of an asteroid? Consider the following excerpt from a Fox News story suggesting just that:

A clay tablet that has baffled scientists for 150 years has been identified as a witness's account of the asteroid suspected of being behind the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Researchers who cracked the cuneiform symbols on the Planisphere tablet believe that it recorded an asteroid thought to have been more than half a mile across.

The tablet, found by Henry Layard in the remains of the library in the royal place at Nineveh in the mid-19th century, is thought to be a 700 B.C. copy of notes made by a Sumerian astronomer watching the night sky.

He referred to the asteroid as a "white stone bowl approaching" and recorded it as it "vigorously swept along."

What will the skeptic say of this discovery? Something along the usual lines no doubt. In fact, as we see in the Fox News story, whenever a discovery of this sort is made, an asterisk of words casting doubt on the veracity of the biblical account accompanies the discovery (emphasis added mine):

Dr Hempsall said that at least 20 ancient myths record devastation of the type and on the scale of the asteroid's impact, including the Old Testament tale of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the ancient Greek myth of how Phaeton, son of Helios, fell into the River Eridanus after losing control of his father's sun chariot.

Essentially, if correct in their findings, archaeologists have found a smoking gun pointing to the accuracy of the Word of God but, in typical fashion, have found a way to mask its meaningfulness to skeptics of the Bible by wrapping their findings in words like "ancient myths" adding that these myths include "the Old Testament tale of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah." And we wonder why, even in the Tribulation Period to come, among many judgments so horrific men's hearts will be failing them for fear (Luke 21:26), Bible prophecy reveals to us that mankind will still be looking for excuses and finding them, refusing to repent and submit to the will of God while in the very midst of prophetic fulfillment!

Just look at the examples we find in Scripture of mankind's stubbornness when it comes to believing in God's Word and repenting of its sins - even in the Tribulation Period to come!

Revelation 9:20-21: And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

Revelation 16:9: And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Revelation 16:11: And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

In these last days, on a routine basis it seems, scientists, historians and archaeologists are piecing together a body of evidence that is supportive of the Word of God's truthfulness in recording events from the past. As this occurs, those of us who study Bible prophecy regularly are pointing at current events as proof that God's prophetic Word is coming to pass before our very eyes. We're pointing directly at evidence that everything the Prophets, Apostles and Christ Himself told us would come to pass is either fulfilling now or on the verge of fulfillment, potentially in the very near future, and yet many - and I do mean MANY - are looking away in disbelief, even laughing at and mocking us often.

As a staunch believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the prophetic Word of God, it breaks my heart to see God reaching out to a lost and dying world the way He is by allowing so many stories confirming the accuracy of His Word to reach its ears only to be rejected in most instances. But, just as much as my heart is broken that the Father is being rejected while trying to reach the lost, I praise Him for allowing His Church to see these evidences being discovered! Why? Because what the skeptic is looking away from, believers in God's Word are drawing great spiritual strength from!

When the believer sees evidence supportive of God's Word having been accurate in the past coupled with current events corroborating what the Bible tells us is yet going to come to pass it puts us on shouting ground, reminding us that our God is alive, on the throne and in control!

Christians, keep our eyes on the skies! As you keep watch, be looking for someone - ANYONE - to tell about Jesus Christ!
