Question: Can we trust God?
by Michael G. Mickey
My pastor gave a sermon some time ago on the
topic of trusting God. During the sermon, he read something he attributed
to a preacher from San Diego that brought such joy to my heart I searched
everywhere to find a copy of the words he read. I even asked the church
secretary if she could get me a copy of them, but, typical of my forgetful
nature, forgot to follow up on getting them from her.
Some time later, I heard an evangelist on television
reading something that sounded oddly familiar to me. Although I realized
what I was hearing read wasn't anything I'd actually heard before, I wrote
down a few of the key phrases read by the evangelist to see if I could find
who had written the words he was reading. As it turned out, they were written
by the same man whose words had moved me so deeply on the topic of trusting
God. Ironically, although I had forgotten to follow through on getting something
I had found spiritually meaningful on the topic of trusting God, my trustworthy
God did not, proving to me yet again that I can trust Him in areas where
I can't trust myself.
Can we all trust God? Really trust Him? Can
we trust Him with our hearts, our lives and our souls? Absolutely! I could
write a million pages on the topic of why we can and should trust God as there are millions of them. Rather than do that, however, I've
elected to share with you the words my pastor read to me on the topic, as
spoken by S.M. Lockeridge, a black preacher from San Diego, in a sermon
he gave to an audience in Detroit in 1976.
You can trust Him!
from a sermon by Dr. S.M. Lockeridge
You can trust Him. He is the one who made us.
It is He who made us and not we ourselves. The heavens declare the glory
of God and the firmament shows forth His handiwork. No means of measure
can define His limitless love, and no farseeing telescope can bring into
visibility the coastline of His shoreless supply. Im telling you,
Church, you can trust Him!
No barrier can hinder Him from pouring out
His blessing. He is enduringly strong and entirely sincere. He is eternally
steadfast and immortally graceful. He is imperially powerful and He is impartially
merciful. He is the greatest phenomena that has ever crossed the horizon
of this world. He is the sinners Savior. He is the centerpiece of
civilization. Im trying to tell you today, Church, you can trust Him!
He does not have to call for help, and you
cant confuse Him. He doesnt need you and He doesnt need
me. He stands alone in the solitude of Himself. Hes august and Hes
unique. Hes unparalleled and unprecedented. Hes supreme and
Hes preeminent. He is the loftiest ideal of literature. He is the
highest personality in philosophy. He is the fundamental doctrine of all
theology. He is the cardinal necessity of Spiritual religion. He is the
miracle of the age. Hes the superlative of everything good that you
can call Him. Im trying to tell you, Church, you can trust Him!
He can satisfy all your needs, and He can do
it instantaneously. He supplies strength for the weak and Hes available
for the tempted and the tried. He sympathizes and He sees. He guards and
He guides. He heals the sick. He cleansed the leper. He forgives sinners
and He discharges debtors. He delivers the captives. He defends the feeble.
He blesses the young. He regards the aged. He rewards the diligent. He beautifies
the meek. Im trying to tell you, Church, you can trust Him!
He is the key to knowledge. He is the wellspring
of wisdom. He is the doorway of deliverance; He is the pathway of peace.
He is the roadway of righteousness. He is the highway of holiness. He is
the gateway of glory. He is the Master of the mighty. He is the captor of
the conquerors. He is the head of heroes. He is the leader of legislators.
He is the overseer of the overcomers. He is the governor of the governors.
He is the prince of princes and He is the King of kings. He is the Lord
of lords. You can trust Him!
His office is manifold. His promise is sure.
His life is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting.
His love never changes. His word is enough. His grace is sufficient. His
reign is righteous. His yoke is easy; His burden is light. I wish I could
describe Him for you. He is indescribable because He is incomprehensible.
He is irresistible because He is invincible. You cant get Him off
your hands. You cant get Him off your mind. You cant outlive
Him, and you cant live without Him. You can trust Him!
There was nobody before Him and there will
be nobody after Him. He had no predecessor. He will have no successor. He
is all things. He is the giver of life. He is the joy out of every sorrow.
He is the light out of every darkness. Hes the peace that passes all
understanding. He is the giver of every good and perfect gift. You can trust
Him!
There is no God before Him. There will be none
after Him. He is the first. He is the last. He is preeminent. There is no
other God! Hallelujah! You can trust Him! |
